I had high hopes for this film and what can I say: I just went back to the theater after the first showing because I couldn’t wait to see it a second time. Remember how we always wondered if Alien and Blade Runner were set in the same universe? The world-building was so well done and elaborate that I was almost disappointed when I thought 30 minutes in that I was watching an Alien movie.
Because the rest is so good
Almost. The way the characters are built in relation to each other and in relation to what’s happening is masterful. I also like how the film thematically and traditionally brings together ALL 6 previous films (there’s a nod to each of them and I’m crazy for a good candy when it’s done on purpose) while also doing its own thing. Because it’s a Fede Alvarez film, as fresh and dynamic as the other films he’s made. Finally, all you have to do is watch the opening: once the computer is on, you know where you are and you know it’s going to be as respectful and familiar as possible.
It was worth the wait
True, there are liberties that come with the lore and some will argue with reason, but personally I can forgive these shortcuts because they serve the pacing (and each film has its own specific Xenomorphs anyway). There’s no downtime, there’s always something going on. It ticks all the boxes but is also unique and special.
